The Southern Nyanza Community Development Project (SNCDP) is a collaborative effort of the Government of Kenya Ministry of State for Planning, National Development and Vision 2030, IFAD and the Beneficiary Communities aiming to reduce poverty and improve livelihoods of the communities within Project Areas of Homa Bay, Kuria, Migori, Nyamira, Rachuonyo and Suba. The project is currently being implemented in 6 divisions covering a population of 146,267 Our MissionTo support sustainable gendered development through use of participatory approaches to enhance food security, access to safe water and better health in a well-conserved environment
Overall ObjectiveTo contribute to poverty reduction and improve the livelihoods of targeted rural communities
Project TargetTargets the poor and most vulnerable, identified in consultation with the communities, through participatory Rural Appraisal process, whereby we assist communities identify their development constraints and enable them develop sustainable solutions through Community Action Plans, based on their priorities and local capacity. Communities in target districts have strong socio-cultural traditions and norms; poverty levels are high; institutional and policy infrastructure is weak; and the HIV/AIDS rate is higher than the national average. The project focuses on empowering rural communities by: 1. Strengthening local institutions and community-driven development activities 2. Improving access to health care services and safe water, and improving environmental sanitation and hygiene practices. 3. Increasing on-farm labour productivity and strengthening human capacity through improved food security and nutrition. Heightening community awareness of social behaviors and their consequences.
Contact InformationThe project covers seven Districts namely; Homabay, Ndhiwa, Nyatike, Kuria West, Nyamira North, Rachuonyo North and Suba. The District Development Officers of the respective districts are the point persons at the district level assisted by departmental heads implementing the project activities. The Project Management Unit is located in Homabay town and is responsible for overall project management and coordination at all levels. Our contact are as follows:
