The Second Kenya Strategy For Development Of Statistics And The National Plan For Advancement Of Environmental Economic Accounting Launch
The Economic Planning Principal Secretary, Dr Bonface Makokha, earlier today, Wednesday 9th July, 2025 officially launched the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) Second Kenya Strategy for Development of Statistics (KSDS II) 2025-2028 and the National plan for Advancement of Environmental Economic Accounting documents, consecutively, at a Nairobi Hotel.
These strategic documents themed “An Agenda for Transformation and Modernization of Data and Statistics” are prepared by the KNBS in collaboration with other key stakeholders. Furthermore, the Bureau provides high-quality statistical data that informs the decision-making and the implementation of Kenya’s development agenda.
During the debut, PS Makokha reiterated that the initiative is built on data, prioritizes people and that it aims for results while fostering a strong and inclusive statistical economic system.
PS Makokha also underscored that statistics is a fundamental public good that plays a critical role in shaping policies through informed decision-making, facilitating effective resource allocation and ensuring efficient public service delivery.
“Together, let us build a Kenya where every policy is informed, every life is counted, and every resource is valued,” PS Makokha said.
The PS further acknowledged the KNBS collaborative effort in coming up with the two key strategies emphasizing that they are not just launched but lived.
The KNBS team led by the Director General, Dr. MacDonald Obudho presented comprehensive reports on the KSDS II and the National plan for Advancement of Environmental Economic Accounting.
The KSDS II focuses on four strategic areas, notably; Data-Driven Culture for Sustainable Development, Coordination of the Statistical System, Statistical Capacity Development and Resource mobilization and sustainability for statistics.
On top of that, this strategic document arrives at a pivotal time as the global statistical landscape rapidly evolves. In order to keep pace, guided by inclusiveness, transparency, and accountability, it embodies a collaborative process and product that reflects owned strategies through efforts of the National Statistical System (NSS).
In addition, the National plan for Advancement of Environmental Economic Accounting approach integrates well with the international frameworks such as Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Paris Agreement and Biodiversity goals.
Moreover, it supports national strategies such as the Vision 2030 and the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda which aligns well with the State Department’s mandate geared towards the Country’s economic growth.
The two-launched documents aligns well with the East African Community (EAC), the Second Strategy for the Harmonization of Statistics in Africa (ShaSA2), the Cape Town Global Action Plan for Sustainable Development Data (CTGAP) and the Department’s national priority, the Fourth-Medium Term Plan (MTP-IV).
In attendance during the launch were: the SDEP Secretary Administration, Dr. Haron Komen, the Ag. Economic Planning Secretaries, James Maina, Festus Wangwe, the KNBS Board Chair, Dr. Daniel Amanja, KIPPRA Ag.
