The 2025 Annual National Sdgs Multi-Stakeholders Conference
THE 2025 ANNUAL NATIONAL SDGs MULTI-STAKEHOLDERS CONFERENCE
The State Department for Economic Planning, Principal Secretary, Dr. Bonface Makokha officially opened the 2025 Annual National Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Multi-Stakeholders Conference earlier today Wednesday, 26th November.
The three-day Conference taking place in Mombasa comes at a critical moment in the global (SDGs) journey as Kenya approaches the final five years before the 2030 deadline.
In his remarks, PS Makokha underscored that the Forum will serve as a compass that will help in guiding the participants towards the collective actions to be undertaken between now and the year 2030.
“Over the next three days, we come together not simply to talk about the SDGs, but to reflect candidly on where we stand, to listen to each other, to share real solutions and to recommit ourselves to lifting the ambitions of the 2030 Agenda,” PS Makokha reiterated.
PS Makokha further highlighted that the Country is reporting on 171 indicators. He noted that the achievement has been made possible through strong partnership with the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) and County Governments.
Concurrently, PS Makokha launched the Race to 2030 Campaign. He noted that the Campaign is quite important and aims at enhancing SDGs achievement through coordinated action and strengthened accountability.
The SDGs adopted in 2015 as a universal call to eliminate poverty, reduce inequality and protect the planet, have seen notable progress in areas such as Education, Health and Renewable Energy.
However, according to the UN Sustainable Development Goals Report 2025, only 35% of targets are on track or moderately progressing while nearly half are advancing too slowly and 18% are regressing.
Additionally, Kenya has demonstrated strong national commitment to the SDGs through its Voluntary National Reviews (VNR) in 2017, 2020 and 2024, alongside 22 Voluntary Local Reviews (VLR) conducted by the County Governments.
The 2024 VNR highlights substantial progress with 61% of indicators showing improvement.
The conference culminates in the 2025 SDGs Action Roadmap, outlining clear targets and commitments for the next phase of Kenya’s development journey.
In attendance during the Official Opening were; the Economic Planning Director General, Masini Ichwara, International Economic Partnership and Frameworks Directorate, Director Festus Wangwe, National Gender and Equality Commission (NGEC) Chairperson Hon. Rehema Jaldesa, and the Chief Economist Mombasa Jane Githui representing the (CoG) among other Participants.
