Launch Of The Economic Value Of Unpaid Domestic And Care Work Report 2025
The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) in partnership with the State Department for Gender Affairs and Affirmative Action and other Key Stakeholders has today Tuesday, 4th November launched the Economic Value of Unpaid Domestic and Care Work Report, 2025 at a Nairobi Hotel.
The event themed “Recognizing Economic Value of Unpaid Domestic and Care Work through Official Statistics for Evidence-based Policy and Decision-making” seeks to shed light on the often invisible yet significant contributions of unpaid domestic and care work to Kenya’s economy.
The report analyzes how unpaid household labor contributes to the economy and quantifies it by assigning an appropriate wage rate. It emphasizes the need to account for such contributions in national statistics and economic planning.
Moreover, the document aligns well with Kenya’s Vision 2030 and the 2030 Agenda for World Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly on gender equality and women’s empowerment.
Speaking during the launch, the Economic Planning Principal Secretary, Dr. Bonface Makokha highlighted that the report provides valuable data that will inform policies aimed at reducing gender disparities and promoting inclusive economic growth.
PS Makokha further reiterated that the statistics in this report provides credible evidence and quantitative data which is fundamental for public good.
On her part, the State Department for Gender Affairs and Affirmative Action Principal Secretary, Anne Wang’ombe stated that this report compliments well with the Forth Medium-Term Plan IV (MTP-IV), the National Policy on women empowerment and the National Care Policy.
The high-level event brought together policymakers, gender advocates, development partners and researchers to deliberate how data-driven policies can promote equitable participation of women in the labor market and policy frameworks.
The initiative is supported by United Nations Women, Sweden Sverige, Women Count and the SDGs Kenya Forum among other Partners.
