Meeting Between the Economic Planning Principal Secretary and SDGs Stakeholders

The State Department for Economic Planning, Principal Secretary, Dr. Bonface Makokha earlier today, Wednesday, 11th June, 2025 met with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Forum Kenya Stakeholders at a Nairobi Hotel.

The meeting which brought together members of the SDGs Inter-Agency Technical Working Committee (IATWC) aimed at enhancing collaborations and partnerships in order to foster effective implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals in the Country.

During the meeting, the key areas that were highlighted included the importance of fostering joint efforts, adopting innovative strategies to accelerate progress and improving the availability of quality data for tracking SDGs achievements at both National and County levels.

In addition ,the team presented to the PS a detailed report on the current status of SDGs implementation. The presentation covered achievements, persistent challenges, key priority areas, ongoing and planned national and global initiatives, stakeholder contributions and performance indicators for each goal.

The team also briefed the PS with a set of key takeaways and recommendations such as strengthening cross-sectoral collaboration, promoting inclusive and sustainable multi-stakeholder engagement, scaling up capacity-building initiatives for both state and non-state actors.

The Fourth-Medium Term Plan (MTP IV) and the current County Intergrated Development Plans (CIDPs) both align with the government’s Bottom-Up Transformation Agenda (BETA). This focuses on the SDGs among others, eradicating hunger, creating jobs, bringing down the cost of living and ensuring inclusive growth of all Kenyans.

PS Makokha acknowledged that Kenya’s progress towards achieving the SDGs has faced several constraints, including limited access to international financing, global economic shocks, currency volatility and the adverse effects of climate change.

However, despite these challenges, the PS urged the team on the importance of providing timely, quality and reliable data reports. He emphasized on the critical need to remain focused and committed in advancing the SDGs agenda.

PS Makokha underlined that Kenya remains committed in aligning its National Development Plans with the SDGs and will continue to implement projects and programmes that support this transformative global agenda.

Also present during the meeting was the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Kenya, Dr.Stephen Jackson, SDGs Kenya Forum, Executive Director, Florence Syevuo, Bondo Member of Parliament Hon. Dr. Gideon Ochanda, Ag. Economic Planning Secretaries Timothy Gakuu, James Maina, Festus Wangwe and the Inter-Agency Technical members among others.
