Meeting Between The State Department For Economic Planning And The World Resources Institute
This afternoon, the State Department for Economic Planning (SDEP), Principal Secretary Dr. Bonface Makokha met with representatives from the World Resources Institute (WRI) at the Treasury building.
The aim of the meeting was to solidify the partnership between SDEP and WRI by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).
During the signing exercise, PS Makokha
expressed his appreciation for the WRI initiative, noting that this undertaking comes on the eve of Kenya’s Mazingira Day celebrations, highlighting the collaboration’s relevance and timeliness.
In addition, PS Makokha stated that this joint venture underscores the Country’s commitment to environmental conservation and sustainable development.
On their part, the WRI team, led by the Country Director Dr. George Mwaniki, reaffirmed the institute’s commitment to partner with the government and other stakeholders to address pressing environmental challenges particularly on climate change.
Moreover, Dr. Mwaniki emphasized on the importance of collective action in achieving a sustainable future, stressing WRI’s ongoing initiatives and projects in Kenya.
PS Makokha urged each one to embrace environmental conservation by planting trees, aligning with the presidential directive to plant 15 billion trees by 2032.
He further reiterated the importance of collective action in achieving this ambitious goal, underlining the significant benefits of tree planting for biodiversity, climate regulation and soil conservation.
The World Resources Institute works to improve, protect and restore nature and stabilize the climate.
In attendance during the meeting were; the Head of Monitoring, Evaluation and Public Investment Management Directorate, James Maina, the WRI Operations Associate, Ifrah Farah among others.
