SCHOOLS BENEFIT FROM RELIEF FOOD DISTRIBUTION INITIATIVE

The Relief Food Distribution Initiative was launched today Friday,30th January, at Our Lady of Mercy Girls Senior School and St. Paul Busende Day Secondary School respectfully in Busia County.The exercise will benefit all day schools and special needs primary schools in the County.
The Food drive which was flagged by the Economic Principal Secretary, Dr. Bonface Makokha ,aims to achieve 100% transition of learners joining grade 10 ,support the most vulnerable and secure the future of the girls in the region. During the exercise 1500,assorted bags of food items were distributed.
The drive is part of a Whole Government Approach by the Kenya Kwanza Administration to address food insecurity in the region.
Dr. Makokha said that” The government is committed to ensuring that our schools and local communities have access to nutritious food that will help alleviate hunger ."
The food distribution exercise, will not only help achieve 100% transition but also help learners to get quality education and also boost school retention, where no learner will be left out of school because of lack of food.
"There is a long term plan by the government to alleviate hunger, by investing in employing Agricultural Extensions Officers, high quality seeds and fertilizer"he added.
Present during the exercise were Busia the County Commissioner Mr. Stephen Ondire,the County Director of Education Mrs Mary Ochoire,Principal of Our lady of Mercy Girls Senior School Mrs Domitila Nageri, Principal of St. Paul Day School Mr.Simon Barasa, among others.
