The Induction Workshop For The Newly Appointed Economic Planning Directors
This afternoon, the Economic Planning Principal Secretary, Dr. Bonface Makokha addressed the newly appointed Economic Planning Directors and Chief Economists at the Kenya School of Government (KSG), Lower Kabete Campus.
In a workshop filled to capacity, the Directors present were drawn from various government departments, the State Department for Economic Planning (SDEP) headquarters and those that were recently appointed to these two cadres.
The gathering comes at a critical moment when the SDEP is in the process of Re-Engineering the Economic Planning Function to foster Responsive National and County Planning.
The workshop themed: “Aligning Economic Planning to National Development Agenda” kicked off on Monday, 2nd February, 2026.
The five-day induction event is designed to equip the incoming Economic Planning Directors and Chief Economists with a deep understanding of governance mandates and institutional frameworks.
In addition, the forum covers a wide range of critical areas including; Economic Planning Policies, Public Finance and Investment Frameworks, Monitoring and Evaluation Systems and the Operational and Communication Strategies essential for effective service delivery.
While addressing the participants during the workshop, PS Makokha welcomed and informed them that the Department provides a conducive working environment for all staff.
“This induction is not a ceremonial formality but it marks an entry to the State Department which is undergoing a deliberate and well structured transformation.” The PS said.
He encouraged the participants to embrace result-based reporting and institutional peer-review as the State Department undertakes key initiatives, including the revamping of e-NEMIS/CIMES Monitoring and Evaluation Systems.
During his address, he stressed on the need for Economists to be proactive and take the lead as Agenda setters given the central role that the Economic Planning docket plays in National development.
Consequently, emphasis was laid on the significance of effective policy formulation, coordination as well as active-tracking of the implementation of the Fourth Medium-Term Plan (MTP IV 2023-2027).
The workshop provides an opportunity for open dialogue, clarification of policy direction and alignment of the Department’s objectives with the broader Government Agenda.
In attendance were: Economic Planning Director General, Dr. Masini Ichwara; KSG Director General, Prof. Nura Mohamed; Ag. Economic Planning Secretaries James Maina, Festus Wangwe and Evelyn Anupi among others.
