The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) Team Pays A Courtesy Call To The Economic Planning Principal Secretary

A team from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) earlier today, Thursday, 31st July, 2025 paid a courtesy call to the Economic Planning Principal Secretary, Dr. Bonface Makokha at the Treasury Building.

The meeting aimed to strengthen collaboration and address key priorities for improving Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) systems in the Country while focusing on deepening the partnership between UNICEF and the State Department.

The UNICEF team led by the Chief of Social Policy and Deputy Representative, Dr. Ana Gabriela, briefed the PS on their ongoing support towards enhancing key M&E systems. This includes the continued development and use of digital platforms such as the electronic County Integrated Monitoring and Evaluation System (e-CIMES) and the electronic National Integrated Monitoring and Evaluation System (e-NIMES).

The team also emphasized their support for both the County and National government in rolling out of the Monitoring and Evaluation Policy as well as providing technical support in conducting critical evaluations.

During the meeting, the UNICEF team updated the PS on their ongoing Country Programme (2022-2027) under Kenya for Development Framework where they have been collaborating with KIPPRA and the KNBS on policy statics and data analysis.

They highlighted progress made in many other programs they are supporting mainly under Children’s issues who compose a population of not less than forty percent despite challenges experienced such as drought and the recent COVID-19 pandemic among others.

Additionally, the team gave detailed insights from the recent County-level data analysis and reports conducted in collaboration with the State Department’s Semi-Autonomous Government Agencies pointing out the importance of evidence-based planning and decision-making in order to achieve development goals.

They further underscored on their efforts to promote and protect the rights of children and women through initiatives such as Women Empowerment, Brighter Tomorrow, and addressing the Cycles of Poverty Affecting the Kenyan Children.

On his end, PS Makokha expressed appreciation for UNICEF’s longstanding support and partnership. He commended the organization for its commitment to strengthening data systems and evidence-based planning in the Country, particularly at the County level.

PS Makokha reiterated on the State Department’s readiness to continue working closely with the team in order to achieve the shared development goals among others, the review of tracking the Fourth Medium-Term Plan(MTP-IV, 2023-2027), evaluation of the implementation of the Kenya Vision 2030 and capacity buildings for Economists.

The meeting concluded with both parties agreeing on the importance of continuous collaboration and partnerships with the aim of improving transparency and accountability of the National Development Planning advancements.
